November 7, 2008: Heed the Girls

Six weeks ago, I found myself struggling with what seemed like an arcane detail of my storyverse. As far as I knew, it wasn’t something that had any impact on the actual story, so it should have been something I could ignore until I figured it out. I’ve done that with a lot of things, without any trouble, but this was different. For whatever reason, it stopped me in my tracks, and I couldn’t go on until I knew what the truth of that arcane detail was.

Fortunately, writing friends brainstormed with me and I was able to get myself out of my jam and move on. I knew at the time that the demand to figure it out came from the Girls in the Basement — there’s something different about getting jammed when it comes from the Girls — and I trusted that in time I would know what it was about.

I was right. The new first scene is a direct result of figuring out that arcane detail. The arcane detail also gave me a massive insight into Prince Kerlis, one that will be key if I do end up writing a story about him.

If I hadn’t paid attention to the Girls, if I’d muscled my way through the blockade, I wouldn’t have a new first scene, or that insight into Prince Kerlis.

So, basically, pay heed to the Girls.
