January 5, 2008: My Wishlist and To-Do List

Today, I spent some time figuring out what it is I want with this software, whatever it is. This is what I’m looking for:

  • To have one central place for everything: images, research and world-building info; character info; plot outline(s); lists of names; the actual text of the book.
  • I don’t have to be able to create the images in the project — I’m fine with what I’m using to collage and character brainstorm.
  • I want the story to be easy to rearrange. If I rearrange the outline, I want the text to rearrange, and vice versa.
  • I want to be able to export to Word and import from it.
  • I want the text to be a little prettier than it is in yWriter (though if yWriter gave me everything else, I could live without smart quotes.

Liquid Story Binder does some of these things, but it’s so huge, it’s overwhelming me. Plus, I don’t think it’s particularly intuitive for me. (That is, I have a certain way of thinking, and something intuitive for me is something aligned with that way of thinking.)

After I wrote all that, I gave myself a to-do list. One of them had to do with a collage idea I got. This is the result of that idea:

I want to be able to have images like that available to me as I work in windows floating around my text, working on my subconscious.

Ever onward — at least Im making a little bit of progress.
