March 6, 2009: Springing

Spring is coming. It’s not the date that tells me so — it’s something I can’t entirely define in the air. I think it’s the light in the evening, a softness in the air, the sounds of birds in the morning. The trees are getting ready to bud, little whip-like tendrils sprouting at the ends of branches that have been dry and stiff all winter long. I expect to see a robin any day now.

This is the time of year when winter seems hard to endure. I’m so sick of cold and snow and coats and mittens and wool. I want sunshine and green grass and watching the Red Sox on a Sunday afternoon. I want to see the trees in clouds of blossom on Boston Common. I even want all the hassles of Marathon Monday and riding the subway.

Spring is coming but — as always when I can glimpse it on the horizon — it’s not coming fast enough.

This is one of my favorite times of year–school is nearing the end of another year, and everyone is itching with spring fever. I really enjoy your posts–thanks for writing them 🙂

Thank you for visiting and even more for the kind words — sometimes it feels like I’m talking to myself, so it’s nice to know that’s not true…
