April 11, 2009: Apollo 13

Apollo 13 is on right now. It’s one of my favorite movies, but there are a few places that make me roll my eyes. One just played, the part where Ken Mattingly, played by Gary Sinise, is trying to figure out how to power up the Odyssey and refuses a particular type of flashlight because the guys up in space won’t have that kind of flashlight. “Don’t give me anything they don’t have.”

That’s never made any sense to me.

Nor has the part when he refuses to get any rest because the crew of Apollo won’t be getting any rest. Um, so you’ll compromise your brainpower for solidarity they don’t know about, when your brainpower is what they need to get back alive? (Never mind the larger implausibility of two guys “working the problem” — that I kind of get, from a dramatic perspective.)

Still, despite those hiccups, it’s a very cool movie.
